What students and educators are saying…

I feel like just watching this for the past hour and a half, I’ve learned more about Asian American history than I have the past 15 years I’ve been in school. I’m really grateful you have made this film.
— Mary, Florida State University Student
Chinatown Rising left an indelible mark on our school, showing how a small group of dedicated individuals with no special power or connections made a difference in the lives of their community for generations to come.
— Shelly Luke Wille, Children's Day School Head of School, San Francisco
I’ve never seen historic Asian America come alive with such visual energy. There’s nothing nostalgic about Chuck’s insider view of a Chinatown—one that belies model minority stereotypes.

Chinatown Rising is appropriate for upper K-12 grades, college and all adult audiences. It explores a crucial chapter of American history that has been left out of the textbooks. If you want to understand both the conflicts and the possibilities of a changing U.S., Asian American histories like Chinatown Rising are essential.
— Renee Tajima-Peña Series Producer, PBS's "Asian Americans" Professor of Asian American Studies , UCLA
Chinatown Rising offered us a very impactful depiction of community resistance and solidarity in the face of oppressive power. It showed that, for certain communities, power is not given, but it is claimed.
— Hassan Saab, McGill University Student, Montreal
It’s meaningful and empowering for students to see the AAPI community stand up against inequity and resist the status quo. Asian Americans were/are not docile nor meek, but vocal, politically aware, and agents of change on a local and national level.
— Pierre Carmona, San Francisco University High School Instructor
Many of my students knew *of* Chinatown before seeing the film, but the extraordinary footage from the film brings the neighborhood to life in a way that the readings for the class simply could not.

In reading my course evaluations, I was not surprised to learn how impactful this film screening was for my students. We were able to host several incredible guests throughout the course yet this was the thing students mentioned the most when they wrote about the class - they were inspired by the film, and deeply moved by the remarkable storytelling of the filmmakers.
— Corey Cook, Saint Mary's College Professor of Politics, Moraga
As someone who grew up around Chinatown in the 1970s, I had activists as role models all around me—addressing issues facing youth, the elderly, housing, and education. I lean on their legacy of struggle and change as I teach at SF State Asian American Studies and co-lead Stop AAPI Hate, which addresses anti-Asian violence. I hope all students can adopt these activists as their own role models by viewing Chinatown Rising. Their amazing commitment to the community and humble leadership continue to inspire me.
— Russell Jeung PhD, Professor, Asian American Studies, San Francisco State University, co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate
Our high school students were extremely engaged in learning about the journey of the Chinese American experience in our neighboring San Francisco. I 100% recommend this film to all students whom will benefit from the incredible perspective of an American experience told through the story of the evolving San Francisco Chinatown.

The story very much relates to many immigrant communities’ experiences throughout the USA’s existence. Most importantly, after engaging in this film, students will realize the importance and possibilities of activism for the benefit of community.
— Sean Schochet, The Nueva School instructor
